Daily Stoic 07.19 | Forgive Them Because They Don't Know
Marcus Aurelius, Meditations, 7.631
Just as Jesus prayed for those who crucified him, because they "know not what they do". Also as Marcus reminds us over a hundred years after Jesus. We must always Keep in mind that "every soul is deprived of truth against its will". Be gentle with those who don't have the knowledge of the stoic virtues, how would they know about their wrongdoing? Hold this, and be grateful that you have found the knowledge of the stoics and of providence.
“As Plato said, every soul is deprived of truth against its will. The same holds true for justice, self-control, goodwill to others, and every similar virtue. It’s essential to constantly keep this in your mind, for it will make you more gentle to all.”↩
