Daily Stoic 07.14 | A Little Knowledge is Dangerous
Epictetus, Discourses, 3.13.201
Every great skill or power is also a great danger to the skillful beginner. Early promise in any given art can lead to an overconfidence that, if left unchecked, can spiral out of control fast. When an early student of an art gains this overconfidence, they will often skip basic lessons and ignore fundamentals. This will inevitably lead to the creation of bad hablts that wil be hard to break. Whether you are the student or the teacher, don't get carried away. Take things slow. Train with humility and in harmony with nature.
“Every great power is dangerous for the beginner. You must therefore wield them as you are able, but in harmony with nature.”↩
